The rating is based on five categories and numerous levels of subcategories for each category. The Alpena hospital scored well in the areas of patient experience, safety of care, efficiency and effectiveness of care, and readmission rates. The health system is one of only 13 in Michigan to receive the overall top rating.
The hospital also earned high marks in patient survey results and clinical outcomes. The rating is a significant achievement, especially in the current environment of declining resources and increased demand for medical services. The 145-bed hospital was recognized for its outstanding efforts in providing excellent, compassionate care to patients.
In addition to its inpatient and outpatient services, the hospital is known for its community outreach programs. Its diabetes education center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and is certified by the Michigan Department of Community Health to provide self-management training. The program offers a variety of services, including insulin pump training and an individualized treatment plan for children with diabetes.
MyMichigan Medical Center-Alpena has also excelled in the category of patient experience and efficiency and effectiveness of care. In the latter, the hospital excelled in a measure that assesses whether the hospital’s Medicare expenditures for each episode of care were lower than or equivalent to national averages.
The hospital is currently undergoing a large expansion project that includes a new three-story patient tower on its campus on Chisholm Street. The building will contain 60 private rooms for patients as well as additional space for the emergency department and other health care services. The tower is expected to be completed by 2021. The new facility will also house an integrated behavioral health center and a three-story parking structure. Upon completion, the hospital will be home to more than 300 doctors, nurses and other support staff. The facility is a leader in the region for providing comprehensive health care, wellness, rehabilitation and diagnostic services.
