In the heart of northern Michigan, surrounded by pristine forests and crystal clear water, Alpena General Hospital is a healthcare facility that provides comprehensive medical services to its patients. The 139 licensed bed hospital is situated among friendly neighbors and picturesque countryside, making it a desirable place for patients to live while receiving their treatment. The facility features a wide range of specialties, including emergency medicine, women’s health, cardiac care, orthopedics, and more. In addition, the hospital has a behavioral health department that treats mental illness and drug and alcohol addiction.
The hospital’s employees strive to build healthy communities by providing excellent health care services. The facility offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient services, such as an Autologous Blood Clinic, Cancer Center with Radiation Therapy, Behavioral Health Department, Community Health Education Services, Dialysis Center, and a Pharmacy. It also provides a full-service Emergency Department that is open 24-hours a day.
The facility was recently rated by the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It received five-star ratings in the categories of nurse communication, doctor communication, and staff responsiveness based on the HCAHPS national survey that asks hospital patients about their experiences during a hospital stay.
According to the hospital’s president, Michael Erickson, these ratings are indicative of the quality of care provided by the medical staff. He added that the ratings will help patients make more informed choices when selecting a health care provider.
He continued to say that the hospital is pleased with these results, which are similar to the hospital’s Leapfrog Group grade of C. He said that the organization is expecting a higher rating next year.
Founded in 1915, Alpena General Hospital is home to more than 251 physicians and mid-level practitioners, who specialize in 44 different medical specialties. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. In addition, the facility has more than 100 allied health professionals who provide services on a non-acute basis, and more than 40 primary care providers that practice in the facility’s Family Medicine department.
The hospital is currently in the process of constructing a new patient tower, which will include 60 private rooms for medical/surgical patients, eight labor and delivery rooms, 44 ambulatory surgery and telemetry beds, 18 prep and recovery rooms, and flex rooms. The project is expected to be completed by 2020. The facility is also undergoing renovations in its emergency room to add additional capacity and improve the overall flow of the space.
